The observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in an atomic gas in 1995 was a seminal result. Since then we have seen the explosion of activity, both experimental and theoretical, in the field of quantum degenerate gases. In particular, the attention of researchers was focused on the properties of gaseous systems with reduced dimensionality. Of a great importance were solitons in quasi-one-dimensional clouds. In my talk I will summarize experimental achievements on solitons in ultracold atomic gases. I will also present our recent results regarding thermal solitons in Bose gases, their statistics, and relation to Type II elementary excitations predicted already many years ago within the exactly solvable Lieb-Liniger model.
